Opinion: Recommended Cantrips
by Zeno Argyris
In this short article, I would like to share some of my recommended cantrips, based on my own experience. This article is intended for beginner Wizards. However, it might be useful to other spellcasting disciplines that share similar cantrips.
Acid Splash. Standard mid range with mediocre damage. Useful against monsters who are vulnerable to acid or has regenerative power that can be stopped with acid.
Detect Magic. Useful, but better if you can cast it outside your limited spell resource.
Electric Arc. Mid range spell that can target two enemies at once. Acceptable damage and the targets might not be able to avoid it entirely. Good to have as back up.
Mage Hand. Utility spell that can be used to pick up light objects from a distance.
Message. Although situational, this spell can be useful to convey short messages from a long distance.
Prestidigitation. The simplest magic trick. The most useful features of this spell is to clean something and little else.
Produce Flame. A versatile close to mid range attack spell. Average damage and needs your aim to be good.
Ray of Frost. This spell deals average damage, but it has a ridiculously long range for a cantrip. Good for sniping.
Shield. This defensive spell can be a life saver. Unfortunately, once it gets shattered, you have to wait for a while before you can cast it again.
Sigil. You can mark your valuable property with this spell or use it to mark your path in order to avoid getting lost.
Telekinetic Projectile. Archers and crossbowmen will eventually outperform this spell in terms of accuracy or damage. However, if you manage to land a hit with this spell, it deals a pretty good damage.
